Bansko is situated in the North-East skirts of the Pirin mountain, below the highest and most beautiful Karst formations. Bansko is one of the major winter resorts in the country. In addition to that it preserves unique architecture and invaluable historical significance which converts Bansko in the pearl of the Bulgarian necklace.
The legendary Pirin mountain in the most impressive point of interest in the vicinity. South from Bansko is located the National park "Pirin". The maountain and the park are from an alpine origin with a variety of glacial formations. The highest peak is Vihren - 2915 m. There are more than 180 circus lakes in the skirts of the picks of the park. The biggest lakes are the lake of Bunderica, Vasil, Straja, Todor, Valev, Popov, Kremen, Preval and Vlah.
Bansko is important cultural center in the region. The village is historically proven to be settled for the first time around 9-10 c.a.C. in a land of the anciant Tracians. In the 18 c. the village is mentioned as vast and prosperous, with flourish crafts and commerce with the Aegean sea and Europe.
Bansko is a center of a historically significant school of arts. In the 18th and 19th century talanted painters and woodworkers create masterpices of houses and churches in Bansko, the Rila Monastery, the monateries in Atos, Serbia and Macedonia. The most famous painters are from the clan of Molerov, beginning with its founder Toma Vishanov.

Despite the beautiful P irin mountain and the countless places with nature beauty, the city disposes with a variety of historical places. Rests from anciant castles are preserved in the neghbourhood of the Old city village, situated 4 km South-West of the city in the area of Ulen (on the coast of the Demianica river). Archeological excavations reveal tombs from the 2nd century b.C. and bronze surgical tools, rests of preparation for surgery in the area of Dobiokovica (West from Bansko). The scientists suppose that a medieval village existed in the land of St. Trinity (North-East of the city). South-East of Bansko were found ruins of Late Medieval churches - "St. George" and "St. Ilia". |
